What Classes are Required?
Classes are offered in two categories: basic and enrichment. Basic courses are mandatory for all new volunteers and enrichment courses are designed to enhance the leader's interaction with the girls (and, in fact, contribute to her / his enjoyment).
1. New Leader Starter Kit
Get details about getting started with your troop and acquaint yourself with your service unit (local geographical volunteer group), your Council and your National Organization.
This packet will be sent to you when you are approved as a Leader.
2. Orientation
All new volunteers at Girl Scouts of Western New York, Inc. are asked to complete this course. It is an on–line course (CD's are available on request) designed by Girl Scouts of the USA.
Follow These Simple Instructions:

- Click English or Spanish
- You will be prompted for a password. The password is discover (or descubrir for the Spanish language version)
- You will need to share your learning log inputs with GSWNY's Director of Training. Insert a semicolon (;) at the end of your e-mail address and type the Director of Training's email address – fran.isaacs@gswny.org
For example: janesmith@aol.com;fran.isaacs@gswny.org
The Learning Log must be completed and received by the Director of Training for you to receive credit for being trained.
If you do not have on-line access, CD's are available. You will need to fill out the learning log that will accompany the CD and mail it to:

3. Leadership Essentials
This three hour training is required for leaders or assistant leaders working with girls (to be completed within six months of becoming a leader).
A training that will help prepare volunteers to effectively facilitate the Girl Scout Leadership Experience Program. Participants will learn the meaning of the three keys of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, examine resources that will support that Leadership Experience and learn to facilitate activities in their troop that are girl – led, cooperative and learned by doing. Also new Leaders will learn to be "purposeful" in their leadership.
